Asylum Procedure

If you are seeking protection in Germany, you must submit an
asylum application. This will be examined in the
asylum procedure. The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), based in Nuremberg with numerous branch offices throughout Germany, is solely responsible for processing applications.

Task of the BAMF

The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) examines each case individually to determine whether you have a legal right to protection, for example due to political persecution, war, or other dangers in your country of origin. If you are granted protection status, you will receive the right of residence in Germany.

The Course of the Asylum Procedure

  1. To apply for asylum, you have to submit your application to the BAMF, usually after registering at an initial reception center.
  2. Dublin procedure (jurisdiction check): The BAMF checks whether Germany is responsible for your application or another EU member state.
  3. Personal Hearing: If Germany is responsible for your case, the BAMF (Federal Office for Migration and Refugees) will invite you to a hearing. There you will have the opportunity to describe your reasons for fleeing in detail.
  4. Decision: After reviewing all documents and statements, the BAMF decides whether you will receive protection or whether your application will be rejected. You will receive the decision in writing.
