ÇÎYA Magazine – A Space for Invisible Voices
The ÇÎYA magazine, founded and edited by Monzer Haider (he/him), who fled Afrin, Syria in 2013 and studied political science, Islamic studies, philosophy, and Islamic theology, and Duleem Ameen Haji (he/him), who fled Doghata-Mosul, Iraq, to Germany in 2016 and is studying medicine, provides a space for unseen voices. This magazine addresses rarely told or overlooked stories that deal with topics such as sexuality, identity, displacement, and migration.
Editors Monzer Haider and Duleem Ameen Haji wanted to launch the ÇÎYA magazine as a grassroots initiative to create a platform beyond privileged, elitist, highly academic, or journalistic writing styles. Their goal is to make diversity and migrant perspectives visible, to give marginalized voices space in socio-political and cultural debates, and thus to contribute to a diverse and enriching society – especially at a time when racist and prejudiced narratives against minorities are increasingly being normalized.
